Kid in a Candy Store: A Tale of a Geek at a Tech Expo

I've always been a huge fan of new toys. As you get older your taste merely transcends. The technology industry is the fastest growing industry, and today I got to indulge in a number of current and upcoming products from the companies like MSI, Audio Technica, Nintendo and some more at the Tech Expo held on campus.

Although there were more products featured than I could ever remember, the products that caught my attention the most were Shure and Audio Technica, two of the leading manufacturers of high-end audio devices, since I am a shill for any form of audio gear. The thing about high-end gears is that students can barely afford to even touch them. Thankfully, they had their more affordable models on display to drool over.

Of course, I had to enrich my senses with a pair of Audio Technica MX50s which are some of the best budget headphones money could buy. Another gear that was calling me was the AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Mic that is an all around bang for your buck at just $99! I was pleasantly surprised by the audio quality it transmitted. This is a gear I would highly recommend for any entry level musician or podcaster or any audio enthusiast such as myself.

"The Tech Expo also had goodies for those with bigger pockets and a knack for radio or podcasting."

The Shure SMB7 was a featured product and is THE microphone if you are a professional podcaster. Most major podcasters love this microphone for its quality and it has also definitely made a spot in my personal upgrade list. Now this sweet piece of equipment will run you low by $400 so by no means is it cheap but you do get what you pay for; on the trial, this mic did an amazing job blocking out the crowd of tech lovers. The trial recording was abundantly crisp and clear.

Another major manufacturer boasting its line of equipment was RED aka. The Holy Moly How Much Is This Camera, and even though I am not hugely interested, it was nice to get to touch something I could never afford (an entry level RED camera starts at 10K if you must know, and yes you read that right).

Other companies that stood out were Focusrite that showed off their new line of USB C audio interfaces with 2,4, and 8 xlr input. I personally use the dual scarlett 2i2 and love it. MSI also presented their new all in one PC line as well as their signature laptops. MSI also tried to attract students with their swag bags which I considered was pretty successful until I saw the crowd at the Nintendo booth. I couldn’t figure out what they where showing off and I don't think anyone 2 feet and further from the booth could because it was swamped. If the crowd size is the scale, Nintendo easily won at the Hall of Fame Tech Expo 2018.

Overall, the Expo featured a very diverse bunch, but I do wish there were more representatives in the PC scene. Nothing would make me happier than to see some upgrades for my computer. Other than that I rather enjoyed myself if you couldn't already tell. I'm sure my fellow students would agree that this was well worth the wait time to walk in and I can't wait to see what Hall of Fame has in store for us next.
