Diving into Freelance

On the afternoon of February 14, guests had the pleasure to listen to inductee Marcella Araica talk about her experiences as a freelancer. She explained the advantages of the freelancer lifestyle, discussed some challenges of being your own boss, and shared some techniques and strategies to succeed when you are autonomous.
Marcella is known in the entertainment industry by the name “Ms. Lago”. After graduating in 2002 from the Recording Arts Program at Full Sail University, she worked at the Hit Factory, collaborating with famous celebrities albums such as: Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, and more. She is now an audio engineer, and lately opened her own company, “Dream Asylum Studios”.
During the interview for Hall of Fame, she highlighted some benefits of a freelancer career, like the flexibility to work anywhere you want, the freedom to build your own schedule and the tranquility of being your own manager.
"On the other hand, she advised the participants that it is necessary to take essential actions to always have a job in hand, promoting yourself and joining networking events."
According to her, nowadays is crucial to create an attractive portfolio website to present yourself. In your virtual portfolio you can insert your past jobs, awards, accomplishments and some samples of your work in order to show your abilities and work style. She also pointed out that it is important to make yourself appealing. This personal market would be the key for your success as a freelancer.
Ms. Lago also explained that in the beginning her answer for any job proposal was just yes, without knowing deeply what she needed to do and without analyzing details; for example, how many hours she would take to work on that project. In order to avoid misunderstandings, she suggested to ask as many questions as you can to understand and negotiate before you agree to work in a job.
When it comes to deciding what your focus is on a freelancer business, she said to take time to research what you are interested to build, and to know what your target and values are. Set goals and think about how much you intend to earn per year. Get organized to conquer what you planned.
Throughout the whole speech she captured public attention and delivered relevant messages surrounding the panel topic. Surprising the audience, at the end, Marcella gave everyone a gift - a magnet with a motivational message - which included ten essential things written that require zero talent and make you a better person professionally.
