Those wandering into Hall of Fame may be surprised to see the beautiful butterflies that grace the walls and walkways all across campus. From the hand-painted mural that faces Full Sail Boulevard, to the butterflies that stand outside of the Full Sail Live venue, they are there for you to enjoy as well as remind you of how important they are to the world that we are a part of.

Garry Jones, the fearless leader of Full Sail University has been a member of the Nature Conservancy for years, and it’s due to his love for preservation that he has brought this Migrating Monarch Initiative to his students and staff. The Nature Conservancy is passionate about ensuring clean food, air, and water for future generations, and the Monarch Butterfly is integral to the continuation of that mission.

"The project itself is meant to bring awareness to this majestic creature, and how they have suffered a decline in population in the past twenty years."

It’s thanks to these pollinators that we can take advantage of the many foods that we love such as chocolate, coffee, or avocados, along with countless more products! And it’s important that we as individuals go into the world to make it a better place for ourselves as well as everyone we come into contact with.

“It’s as simple as starting a conversation,” says project representative and MCBS alumni, Stephany Carella-Nazari. “Or people can plant milkweed, which is what butterflies need to survive. They use it as food, and also use them to go from caterpillars to butterflies!”

By bringing this project into the hands of students in all programs at Full Sail University, it gives the unique opportunity for individuals to work on something outside of their normal projects or coursework. And for many, it may come as a surprise to see just how much help the project needs, who they need it from, or even what form of help that may be.

It’s important to leave your mark on the world, not only with your creativity, but with your humanity. Throughout the week of Hall of Fame, the Nature Conservancy tent will be ready and waiting for you to stop by in front of 3B. Pick up a packet of milkweed seeds to plant at home, or take a photo in front of one of the many butterflies posted on campus and put it on social media with #migratingwings as well as #themonarchinitiative to receive a free tote. There are many ways to get involved, so just stop by, say hello, and see where you can be a part of something greater for your community, and for your world at large.
