“Just Do What Phil Says and Good Things Happen”

One of the most insightful panels for those looking to find out who they are as a brand was hosted this year by Phil Pallen, brand strategist, and social media expert. On a daily basis, Phil Pallen works with celebrities, TV personalities and entrepreneurs to develop their brand. In this 4 part series of branding workshops, Phil dives into different parts of creating your brand so that you can graduate knowing who you are and what you want. During his first branding workshop, he talked about positioning yourself as a professional and figuring out who you are as a professional.

When figuring out your brand, you need objective feedback “don’t ask your friends and family” Pallen says. For this part of the lecture, Phil set up a little exercise for us to do, we divided into groups and shared our story to one another replying in one sentence what the other person’s brand was. This is a great way to get objective feedback. Phil Pallen recommends doing this exercise a few times with different people to narrow down who you are as a brand. It is important to start using your brand sentence, because if you describe yourself in that way, Phil says “Others will describe you with that sentence when you’re not in the room.”

Phil Pallen also shared the questions he often asks his clients when helping them develop their brand and here they are:

Describe yourself in three words (Pallen even suggested to try asking this question to friends on Facebook and see what people say the most).

Three things I wouldn’t know from looking at you.

Name a few brands that you look up to? Why? (The why is the most important part).

What do you love to do? (Create a job based on passion).

What’s your brand in one sentence?

Describe your audience in detail. (Be very specific, give them a name and personality).
