“I am not a nerd, I’m a gamer” is what I was told by a student who was literally playing Runescape on his computer. Although he refused to give me his name because he cherished his anonymity, he was still nice enough to tell me why he chose gaming as his major. “Gaming is what made me feel like I fit in. I was made fun of as a child. I was called a loser, a nerd and I didn’t have many friends. When I started playing Runescape 11 years ago, I made nothing but friends and partners in crime that helped me get over my depression.”
After crying for about three minutes, I ran to the Game Design panel, which ended up being students promoting their game ideas to professional game designers. Being able to witness the hard work of these guys was truly an experience. Course Director Joshua Fox explained to me why he became a gaming instructor, “I’ve been playing games for many years and it dawned on me that I wanted to also design them. I came to Full Sail 17 years ago as a student. Never have I thought of teaching my passion. Gaming has so many game types, styles, and visual elements. I’ll compare it to art. You have different types of paint, oil, acrylic, different size canvases. You begin and it’s never complete till you’re satisfied.”
Being a Media Communications student, I wasn’t sure if I would have a lot in common with the Game Design students, but I was wrong. We all share the same passion for our programs. These guys love games, they have an understanding of what games are, and just how important they can be!
