Career Expo Entrance

When students go to get their degrees, they expect to get a job right after they graduate. Some students overwhelm themselves with the thought that they will not be able to get a job after they finish their studies. Since a lot of students have the fear of not being successful after graduation, we decided to stop by to some of the employers from various companies.

“If the employees see an easy way and a right way, they’ll do the right way.” - Stephanie Daugherty

We first stopped by Hearst Television to ask about the broadcasting industry and the expectations. Stephanie Daugherty was one of the representatives that came down from Full Sail to talk to the students that are interested in the opportunities offered. Stephanie started off by stating her expectations, which included being able to advocate for yourself and to be passionate about what you are doing. When she started working at Hearst Television, that was when they started building the foundations for the HTV Design division. She came to Hearst because of their reputation. She never had the intention to work for a television company, but when she graduated and got her degree in Graphic Design, she applied to Hearst, and she got hired. She advises students to take any opportunity that they can, because it can lead to them getting a foot in the door for new and better opportunities.

Hearst is recruiting students to take on some job opportunities such as: Graphic Designer, Motion Designer, Compositor, Social Media Intern, Production Assistant, Marketing Coordinator, Digital Account Manager, Producer, and Reporter. Go check it out here.

“So when we bring people in, we want people that work hard and have a good attitude, and we’ll help teach them and grow them from what they learned here from Full Sail.” - Mark Steinwachs

Our next stop was Bandit Lites, which was one of the first companies that worked on lighting for concerts. Mark Steinwachs is the general manager. He got an opportunity while touring to go on a tour bus, and worked his way up to become the general manager. The way he made it to the top is by starting as an employee at the store. His last remark on what he expects from graduates is not to be the fastest or the strongest one, but to work hard and work harder than anybody else.

“They need to make sure that they are putting their best foot forward, because first impression is everything.” - Casanova Williams

Many students are interested in broadcasting and being part of a radio company, so we decided to stop by Culture Radio and ask about who they are and what they have to offer. We talked to the CEO of the company, Casanova Williams, for more insight. One of the things they expect when people go looking for a job is professionalism, meaning the way you act and carry yourself. Another thing they look at is resumes and portfolios. The reason behind this is because many of the people that apply for a job come unprepared. Graduates or anybody seeking a job should always do research on the job they are applying for and what type of company they are.

“We are looking for people that are passionate because they are going to invest their time. They’re going to continue their education and grow.” - Tim Popowsky

Our final stop was Ford Audio Video Systems, where we met up with Tim Popowsky, representing the company for the Career Expo. One of the things they expect from graduates and anyone else looking for a job is having relevant experience. They also expect passion about working with both audio and video content. When he graduated, Popowsky had no experience, but the company gave him a chance, because they saw that he wanted to grow and learn more. He has been with the company for 17 years, and he continues to gain knowledge and get better at his craft.

A look inside the career expo

Students, no matter whether they graduate soon or not, should be able to get a job if they follow these tips from people that are already working in the industry. Anyone looking for a job should always be open-minded and ready to learn new material. They should be willing to continue growing, because that is how they can get more doors open to new opportunities. Something that all the companies had in common is the main expectation for potential employees is to be willing to continue learning, and to expand to new areas in that workplace. Share your thoughts on how you plan to make your first impression for your future job here.
