Smart Lab Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

"An entrance to the future."

This year's Hall of Fame has been a big week for Full Sail. From the grand opening for the Fortress to the Career Expo, and the grand opening of the Smart Lab. We had the pleasure of seeing the opening ceremony for the Smart Lab, but before it was open for people to take a peek inside, there was also a special announcement from the Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla. The Smart Lab is an opportunity for students to get a taste of the latest technology available in the industry. We also met the person that set all of this into motion, Josh Dunlin.

“I’m a spokesman for the brilliance that exists here.” - Garry Jones.

To kick things off, Garry Jones, President of Full Sail, started the event and acknowledged the importance and the impact the staff at Full Sail have when projects like these are being made. With the Fortress opening and the Smart Lab, it is Full Sail’s commitment to always stay with technology as it continues to evolve, and to never be behind. That’s Full Sail’s commitment because “staying with technology makes sure our students have access to things that are not just today but tomorrow as well.”

Commissioner Emily Bonilla originally graduated from Full Sail in 2010 with a Bachelor’s in Internet Marketing. She continued her education at the University of Central Florida. During the event, she made the announcement that Mayor Jerry Demings proclaimed May 19th-25th of 2019 as Full Sail week!

“Full Sail gets recognized by Orange County!”

“The goal for the Smart Lab is to get people to get excited about technology and to try to envision themselves using this technology.” - Josh Dunlin

After the staff at Full Sail cut the ribbon, we had the opportunity for a quick chat with Josh Dunlin. He is the program director of Mobile Development and Web Design Development. The birth of the idea of having the Smart Lab came from Josh Dunlin two years ago, when he pitched it to the executive team. The Smart Lab is to also give students the opportunity to envision and create new ideas while they’re at Full Sail. The reason why everything in the Lab is electronic, including the table and the fridge, is because connected living is pretty big, and it will continue to grow over the next couple of years. This could include smart appliances, smart thermostat, and even lights, because everything is connected. Even the blinds open and close based off the system, and you can pretty much control every aspect of the room.

“We had an unexpected guest appear.”

In the future, Dunlin hopes that people get to see the students working on applications and making real products in the Smart Lab. With the Smart Lab ceremony, Full Sail has added more resources for students to learn and create, and see their ideas come to life. What are your thoughts on the Smart Lab? What about Mayor Jerry Demings making May 19th-25th of 2019 Full Sail week? Share your thoughts here. Also check the rest of the photos out in our Moments page!
