A Conversation with Timbaland

Even though it was the last day of Hall of Fame, it didn’t mean Full Sail wasn’t going to go all out in their last day! Before the big Hall of Fame Ceremony and the Hall of Fame Block Party, Full Sail had Timbaland at the Live Venue in the Backlot to talk about his beginnings and how he got into producing music. Timbaland also gave students the opportunity to ask questions, and gave advice to the people that want to make it in the industry.

“Present and all accounted for!”

Timbaland has been responsible for hits from Madonna, Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Drake, and the list goes on and on. He started off mostly doing vocals, but after a while he decided he wanted more time making beats and producing music for other artists. He still enjoys what he does in the music industry, and even though it is behind the scenes, he has no problem with that. What inspires him is the enjoyment he gets from music, and what other artists have to offer.

When students asked how they can get hired and work in the industry, or even work with him, he hammered in the idea that work ethics get you where you want to be. He knows that he can produce and help make music, and the whole point of hiring someone is for them to do their part, and he shouldn’t be doing all the heavy lifting. When he was under Missy Elliott’s wing, she worked him hard and made him do more than a hundred beats for the music they wrote. At some point the student became a master when he helped Missy Elliott produce the song “Work It.”

“If I spend four hours in a studio you need to be there for eight hours.”

- Timbaland

What future artists, producers and anyone interested in the music should take away from this is work ethic. People starting off in the industry should work harder than everybody else, and if they don’t know how to do something just ask. It shows you aren’t slacking, and it also shows someone like Timbaland that you are willing to get better.
