If you were looking for a hands-on, entertaining, and all-around great experience, “How To Produce Buzzfeed Videos” with Ivan Emilio Albino was the way to go. Albino is a video producer at Buzzfeed and also a Full Sail Alumni.
This was my very first panel and it was amazing. I emailed days in advance and set up a time to get pictures with Albino and ask a few personal questions.
I have to say he is a really chill and laid-back person. Not only did he take a picture, but he did a Boomerang with me (his idea) and answered my questions before beginning his panel.
I was nervous at first because I thought I was going to be rushed and wouldn’t have enough time. I also thought maybe he wouldn’t be really interested in sticking around too long, since he had to get ready for his panel. I was definitely mistaken. He was the complete opposite. Not only did we take multiple pictures (plus retakes!), he answered all my questions and asked if I had any others. He told me that if I stuck around afterwards, I’ll be able to speak to him again. I tell this story to say this.
Many people are intimidated by a person’s title, not exactly the person. I was a little nervous because of his title as a video producer, but after meeting him all my fears and doubts went away. He was very inviting, fun, funny, and he didn’t rush me. He actually waited to make sure he answered all my questions before getting back to his panel.
The atmosphere of Albino’s panel was busy. It was full of conversations and lots of laughter. My first impression when I walked in was “Where are the chairs for all these people? Are we sitting on the floor?” I was confused, so I spent my time linking up with different people and just enjoying the vibe. Albino even mingled and talked to everyone while things were being set up.
Once the panel began, I understood why the chairs were missing. I got excited when I realized this was going to be a hands-on panel. Instead of telling us how to create a Buzzfeed video, Ivan let us create our own.
We were split into teams where we were told to get to know each other and choose positions. I was the producer, while my other team members were cameramen, directors, editors, or actors. After we all had our positions, we were given items and told to come up with questions to ask the people who were going to be on camera. My team members, Elle and Cierrow, were taste-testing three different types of candies, while I asked the questions that me and my team came up with.
It was so much fun being a producer for the day. I really enjoyed creating and learning how to make a Buzzfeed video. All the teams did great and the videos were so amazing and hilarious! When I felt stuck, a team member would come up behind me and help me out.
After the panel ended, Albino stuck around and talked to everyone. I got one more chance to speak with him and ask more questions. He told each student that he talked to that if we need him for anything, whether it’s advice, feedback, or anything else, that we were able to reach out to him. He was even accepting resumes and video submissions for feedback.
All in all, this was the best experience ever, and I took a lot away from it. I got a chance to actually see and feel what it would be like in a producer’s shoes, the position I want to be in when I graduate. I learned how to create Buzzfeed videos, got great advice from a Full Sail Alumni, and I even received a hug from Albino to seal the whole experience.
So if you have unanswered questions and worries about your future, like we all do as students, and you get the opportunity to lessen those fears and get some clarity like the one i had by going to this panel, DO IT! It was worth it and I definitely feel more prepared and less frightened on my personal journey.
